California Coastkeeper Alliance (CCKA) was founded in 1999 with the belief that clean and healthy water, oceans, and coasts are vital to California’s economy, public health and way of life. Using law, policy, science, and creative media, California Coastkeeper Alliance advances statewide policies and programs for healthy and clean waters.

Along with fellow California Waterkeeper organizations, they are members of the international Waterkeeper Alliance, a network of water advocates with more than 300 programs in 44 countries on 6 continents. California Coastkeeper Alliance works with local Waterkeepers to develop, implement, and defend policies that meet the needs of California’s distinct communities and ecosystems.

California’s interconnected watersheds are threatened by over-allocation and diversions from rivers and streams, uncontrolled development, and increased stressors driven by climate change. CCKA has developed ten principles to increase the climate resiliency of California’s watersheds by promoting and restoring the natural functions of our rivers and streams.

CCKA has put together the Clean Water Agenda for Governor Newsom to stress the importance of achieving: swimmable, fishable, drinkable waters for all communities and ecosystems; ensuring safe and affordable drinking water; protecting the health of our coastal, surface, and groundwater resources; enforcing clean water laws; and restoring our river flows to sustain native fish, ecosystems, and local economies.
